Jessica Chastain won the Oscar for Best Actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye at the 2022 Academy Awards.
She was competing with Nicole Kidman (The Ricardos), Kristen Stewart (Spencer), Olivia Colman (The Lost Girl) and Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers).
Chastain acknowledged her “scene partner and collaborator, Andrew Garfield, the wonderful Andrew Garfield,” and spoke about the challenges of the past few years, utilizing her position to raise awareness about suicide, as well as legislation and hate crimes against the LGBTQA+ community.
“I think about Tammy in moments like this, and I’m inspired by her extreme acts of love,” the actor remarked. “We talked a lot about love tonight. Inspired by her compassion, I see it as a guiding principle that keeps us going. For any of you who feel hopeless or alone, I just want you to know that you are loved unconditionally for the uniqueness of who you are.”
Chastain plays Tammy Faye in the film, which is directed by Michael Showalter. The biographical drama follows the televangelist’s rise to fame, as well as her fall from grace, alongside her husband Jim Bakker, played by Andrew Garfield (himself nominated for Best Actor for Tick…Tick…Boom).
The Eyes of Tammy Faye was nominated for two Oscars in total tonight – the film was also up for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, which it won.
